The Drupe Diaries 4: Yellow Candy! Chewing no Sipping

So the last of our lovely drupes have ripened and my son lovingly picked them off the tree. The sun was out, along with my yoga mat on the grass as we all just took it easy and put our bodies into lazy mode and laid outside.  The zeal I had in my gut to juice these precious plums subsided after something happened as I washed and began to prep them. There was one extra juicy drupe that I bit into it and BAM!  A fleshly, juicy, sweet burst of deliciousness exploded into my mouth.  My son was right by my side and wanted to share this experience after seeing the blissful look on my face.  I obliged, but first, peeled the tart skin for him.  He’s only four and so cautious at times with his taste buds, I knew that this poor plum didn’t stand a chance if he had to taste the skin first.  So, I unveiled the yellow flesh on one side and watched him smile from ear to ear after tasting what he now calls “yellow-candy!”.  He devoured this natural treat with me, under the olive tree, on our yoga mat.  No make-up, no cleaning, no juicing today.  Just chewing and savoring the candy that mother nature has blessed us with on this day.  WP_20150801_002 1

I’m obsessed with juicing because it is the best shot of absorbable nutrients we can give our bodies.  The vitamins, minerals and cancer fighting benefits are assimilated within minutes and get straight to work after it passes our palletes.  I prefer drinking my multi-vitamins rather than popping pills and tablets, because it is in it’s true, most organic, natural form…the way nature intended it to be.  However, eating fruits is great because we get the fiber and flavonoids (especially in the skin) that can get lost in the juicing process, it fills the tummy, and it tastes wonderful.

So this day, I thank my son for reminding me that sometimes it’s okay to take a chill pill from my loud kitchen appliance and just chew my food, lol.  So, no juicing today, just chewing, digesting and filling our bellies with this delicious yellow candy.  Oh yeah, he decided to eat the skin too, when his Father gave him the fruit.  Men.

    • yes! We have a small patch of strawberries and small modest trees: lemon, olive and plum. The neighborhood also has a ton of oranges. They aren’t sweet at all, but free Vitamin C! I pick away at those whenever I get the chance 😉
