My Mother died in April of this year. Talk about April showers. I cried a monsoon of tears and raged with category-4 thunder while lightning bolts of sorrow struck my heart. Ever since I’ve been seeking my balance of self-care, family, health and of course, happiness. Well, today something changed while I was in my closet, and took a good look in the mirror as I was picking out my fro. I realized that I am 33 years old, have been happily married for over a decade, birthed two BIG boys without any drugs and am the proud daughter of one foxy lady: Arlene Mary Ryals Settle. I realized that my wardrobe needed to reflect my accomplishments, pride and my Mother’s legacy of fineness! It’s time to do her proud and stop rocking those cropped track pants that attract moped stalkers.
OOTD photos usually make me uncomfortable, because it focuses on the outward, which I have not always been too happy with. Some people like (Dana’s blog) come off so effortless and confident, and I am inspired by that and reminded that I should be too…I mean, I’m just as human as those chicks on Instagram working it right? Well, recently thanks to my juicing, family, Dr. Sebi knowledge topped off with some yoga…something happened. I started to feel myself blossoming inward. Feeling this beautiful internally has made me confident with my outward appearance, and actually proud of it. I’m happy with my kinks, skin, stretch marks, moles, figure, the whole 9, which makes me a 10, I’ve earned it.
A new friend (hey Valentina!) took me to a mall in Jerez for the first time. I bought this 6 Euro dress from Primark with her, and my shorts are an old pair of jeans I ripped up. Is this getup a little too short for an officers wife? Perhaps. Are my wedges too tall to walk the street juggling two energetic boys pumped full of green smoothies? Probably, lol. Could my earrings be any bigger? Nope. But guess what? To hell with all of that today, it’s hot outside, and my legs are shaved. Just wish me luck so I don’t trip along these cobble-stone streets.
So this OOTD post is for my Mother. She was all about red lipstick, smiling, dancing, liking what she saw in the mirror, and making her children happy along the way. I can hear her now over the phone saying “go ‘head Nette. You get it from ya Mama!” Oh my god, she was the funniest woman, hahahaha! I’m still sad when I think of her, and sometimes that sadness physically freezes me. The only way I thaw out is to push myself forward by repeating her mantra she drilled in me “Focus on your kids Nette. Focus on your family. That’s what’s important”.
So hey Ma! I’m wearing short-shorts today in your honor and to hopefully channel your confidence and pride.
Oh! Jeanette you nailed it with this post…. Not only was it funny and full of love but you really did it for me. As a mom that just gave birth to her 3rd child my insecurities and crazy thoughts have been trying to put me down but as I read your blog and know how great and healthy your family is I know I can do it 2. You are an inspiration and your mom and your family are proud of you. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us and your fun, loving messages… And of course YOU ARE ROCKING THOSE SHORT SHORTS???

You are doing the damn thing! For your mama, your family, yourself and other women like you!
Women let those damn magazines get so much in their head they forget how beautiful they really are.
This is everything girl, don’t stop!
Let that inner glow that you recovered continue to grow. That kind of sh*t is contagious, maybe it’ll spark something in someone else 🙂

You look stunning!! And I’m sure momma couldn’t be more proud of you!! Weeerkk!!!
Btw, have you ever written about being married so young? If not I’d love to hear about it sometime. It’s a discussion I’ve had a few times with friends about how can you “know” you’ve found the one at a young age and the level of maturity it takes to commit like that.

Hey super Model Filomena!!! Thank u for those encouraging words 🙂 AND…I haven’t thot of writing about that, but maybe I should. Sometimes I don’t even realize that some things that I’ve done are a bit “unorthodox” or “old-school” according to the current norm. Thanks for the idea, it’s on the list!!
This Nette might be new or reawakened to you, but this sexy mama is the woman I’ve always known, and LOVE from the inside out. I’m glad you’re on a rediscovery. You look freakin’ awesome! Miss Arlene is proud and always with you. I love you Netto and thanks for being my friend and always an inspiration. ??
