NASA has always been forward thinking when it comes to their culinary skills for the select few that get to see things past our atmosphere. Well, they have really upped the ante for the Mars mission around 2030 with NASA’s Advanced Food Technology (ATF) project. All of the foods on the martian menu are vegan! They already had about 100 recipes back in 2012. Looks like they plan on making this a colorful, fiber friendly, plant based mission. I am so excited about this. I shared this story with my son today and his eyes lit up with excitement because he loves his fruits and veggies and has visions of traveling space one day. Parents tell their children all the time “eat your vegetables”, but now you can tell them that if they want to go to Mars, they better start munching on salads ASAP.
NASA has made it very clear that meat and dairy are just not an option for this in-depth and lengthy mission. It takes approximately 6 months just to get to Mars, and to send food out every 6 months of animal products and dairy just ain’t happening, it’s just not a feasible choice, and do you think they are going to bring a dairy cow with them? The poor cow’s milk would dry up during the mission, and they would have to impregnate her to get her in lactation mode again, and what to do with the calf? I can’t envision astronauts slaughtering animals on board anyway, that would be disgusting, and put them at a dangerous risk for all sorts of cooties. You know that even small crumbs are taken into consideration with waste because of the growth of bacteria? Pillsbury developed the idea to cover foods in some sort of material to prevent crumbs! So I definitely don’t think a dairy cow, or hens are coming along for this trip. Astronauts are projected to sustain themselves with prepared meals, freeze dried goods and also have hydroponic gardens on board. The plan is that they will grow and pick their food right there in their spaceship. I am so excited about this!!!!! To all the parents looking for a way to lure your children into veganism, just show your children that even NASA agrees that veganism is the best lifestyle option due to consuming and producing less waste and also being the healthiest option.
My son has been talking about going to outer space and Mars specifically ever since we started our talks about the sky and beyond. He plans on being an astronaut. I really pray that if he decides to take this route, he let’s his Mama hitch a ride with him. Cause at the rate this planet is going with all of the methane gas being produced from animal agriculture alone, and the top soil fading away, who knows how long before we all have to jump into the Axiom and take a one way ticket to somewhere in the vast darkness.
OOOOH I’m excited. Go Vegan and go to Mars! Yes!
