This stuff is serious, those who are not in the mood to be greased up and embark on the true journey to nourishing their skin, move on to the next post:). I don’t know about you, but lotion does not really do it for me. I never really feel as if my skin is adequately quenched. I don’t know, maybe I have extra thirsty/dry skin, the point is, I need the strong stuff. I decided to take matters into my own hands, by going in my kitchen and whipping up my own body cream. The ingredients are simple, as is the process that I used. Now I have a beautiful jar of fluffy, light, yet very strong body butter that glides all-over-my-boooody (yes, that’s my inner-Sheneneh), illuminates and nourishes my skin, and didn’t leave a huge dent in my bank account or have a bunch of ingredients I can’t pronounce. It has the consistency of a mousse or merengue, but do not let the soft look fool you.
I purchased 8 ounces of beautiful, raw Shea butter when I was taking a much needed retreat/visit to see my big brother. I was applying it raw, but just knew it had so much more potential and was so eager to make magic with it. Real 100% Shea butter can be bought online (Amazon!) , but you can pretty much always find great quality at a black owned bookstore, they ALWAYS have Shea Butter and books, so you’re never ashy or stupid lol.
Ingredients:
- 8 oz Shea Butter
- 3 tbsp. Sweet Almond Oil
- 3 tbsp. Coconut Oil
- 20-gazillion drops of Lavender essential oil (if you make it, use whatever EO you like, this was all I had on hand, but I wanted Ylang Ylang)
How I made my Ash Kicking Cream:
I whipped my ROOM TEMPERATURE shea butter, in a mixer until the consistency was nice and smooth, and started to form into a whipped cream. I could have left it as is and just used pure whipped shea butter but I wanted it to have a little more oomph. So, after the shea mixed for a bit, I added the remaining ingredients and mixed them all together. I have a stand mixer so my process was very easy. I just added everything in and watched the magic happen, but if you are using a hand mixer, it’s going to take a trivial amount of patience. I suggest using this time to reflect on all of the embarrassing moments when your ashy elbows and ankles were exposed to the public, and smile as you affirm to yourself “today is the beginning of my ashy end”. Or you could just jam to music while it’s mixing–your time, your choice 🙂
I wish I had a time estimate, but all I really have is that the whipping time (I think) was under 30 minutes. Once it was whipped to my liking, I plopped it all in a jar and proudly labeled it and thought “behold! My ash has been naturally kicked!” Our hides just gobbled up this nutritious epidermis treat! Our skin giggled and cooed as we took our time massaging it into our pores, reaching new depths of moisture!
Well, with that being said, I have since ran out and back to being ashy. Alas, the cold weather is knocking on my door and Ashy Larry is ready to attack my elbows, kneecaps and ankles (oh and toes too). So off I go to Shop Amazon – Free Shipping on Orders Over $35 (hey!), to purchase a big tub of Shea butter to get ready for winter with no local health/bookstore around to supply my fix. If you try this, let me know how it comes out in the comments below! I would love to hear how other people are saving the world, one ashy ankle at a time. 🙂
